Math Extra Credit and 2nd Advisory Project

Students can complete a Mathematician Report for up to 10 points extra credit. The report must be typed and turned in by January 18th to receive credit (I had told the students January 14th but that is a professional development day).

Over the break students can practice fractions on Math Playground
Click on "videos" and go to fractions. After watching the videos students can click on "games" to practice.

The 2nd Advisory Project is about fractions and students will get instructions on the project after the Holiday Break. The project is due January 12th (Wednesday) so students can start now if they want to get ahead. Please read and follow the directions carefully. If you have any questions you can email me at: mrsunukjian@yahoo.com

I will check emails every few days over the Holidays.

CALCULATOR NEEDED FOR DCCAS!

Students need to bring a simple calculator (add, sub, mult, div, and square root operations) to school ASAP. The DCCAS testing begins April 19, 2010. The calculator can be used on 1 of the 4 mathematics sections on the test. Most simple calculators can be bought for about $5 at CVS, Rite Aid, Staples, or Office Depot. Check www.officedepot.com and search item # 582114 for one example. More advanced calculators can be used if students are already familiar with how to use them.

We have been preparing for the DCCAS over the past few weeks so students have not had very many written HW assignments. Please ask your student about the Comprehensive Study Guide I gave them to study for the DCCAS. They should review this document a few times over the weekend. Thanks for giving your student every opportunity to succeed on this year's test.

Spring Break Math HW

Over spring break students should complete their "Percent Packet". If your student did not receive a packet they can spend a few hours working on their DC CAS preparation (see post below). The students have been working hard and do deserve a break each day to play outside!

Mr. Sunukjian

DC CAS Test Review Resources

Students have been preparing for the DC CAS test. This test will be given during the final two weeks of April. In order to be fully prepared each student should work with their parents and look at the following resources:

1) www.nclb.osse.dc.gov/ click on "bank of released items" and on the next page click "grade 7 math" This will give you all of last year's test items with the answers (my computer gave me all the questions only if I clicked on the first part of 'grade 7' and not the pdf format.

2) www.osse.dc.gov/ click on "Assessment and Accountability" and under "DC CAS Information" click on "2010 DC CAS Resource Guide" This is an 112 page document. The 7th Grade Mathematics information can be found on Pages 55 to 60. These pages contain the testable standards and examples. Each student was given a 2010 DC CAS Math Blueprint that also indicates which operational standards they will be tested on.

Please spend a little bit of time over the next few weeks practicing concepts and questions for the DC CAS. If you have trouble solving a problem look in the Pre-Algebra textbook glossary. A key word in each standard will be in the glossary.

Planners

Planners, Planners, Planners!!!!

Many parents ask "How can I know what my child has for homework?" Because the 7th grade team is concerned with helping your child succeed academically, but want to ensure greater accountability of students, we encourage you to check your child's planner EVERYDAY!!!  Planners were distributed on the first day of school, giving students a place to write all assignments.  Students are supposed to write down EVERY H/W assignment in their planner, and write the words "No Homework" if there is no H/W for a specific class.  Parents, this planner allows you to check to see if your chid is actually keeping up with their H/W and allow you to know what content or skills they are learning. If your child is not using his/her planner, then that is a problem.  But if they know that you will be checking everyday, trust me, they will use the planner as it is intended.
Good afternoon Parents and Students,

Friday ended both the 2nd Advisory and the 1st Semester of the school year.  Report cards will be issued very soon and students will receive new schedules on Monday, January 25th.  Many students will notice that their Encore classes have changed (Chorus, Health, Computer Application, etc.). Some students will also be removed from an Encore class so that they may receive supplemental help from a seventh grade teacher. Please be on the lookout for new schedule changes or letters informing you that your child will participate in Accelerated Achievement classes.

We are beginning the 2nd Semester, with half the school year already completed.  Let's do what we can to ensure continued success in this second half.

Thanks!
