The Outsiders

Parents,

Please double check with your child to ensure that they have gotten OR still have the book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.  I have returned many lost library books to the DC Public Library, and I have found many purchased books lying around the school and in my Lost and Found with no way to identify the owner of the book. I have allowed students to borrow more than 40 books from my personal class set, with a contingency that they return the book at the end of our study or replace my book if they lose it.  Even students who borrowed books from me have misplaced the books I have loaned them! As we are coming to the end of our study of The Outsiders, it is imperative that students have the book in order to complete the character analysis/essay planned next week. I know, I know 7th grade is difficult and our children have the most difficult time keeping up with everything going on, but I want to make sure they have the best possible opportunity to succeed in English.

Have a next weekend, and have fun at the local library or bookstore!

Math Unit Test this Monday

This week we reviewed the concepts in the Number Theory unit. These concepts include: factors (GCF), multiples (LCM), prime factorization, and Integer operations. The students were to review their "accelerated math" questions (from the computer) and complete their Study Guide. The Study Guide can be used on the test on Monday and includes textbook questions:
Page 53 (21-26, 31-56)
Page 210 (13-16, 25-29)

Please help your student review and study for this important test this weekend.

Please remind your student to write down the questions, show their work, and box their answer on their HW paper. This weekend's HW is to make up any missing assignments from this week.
Enjoy the three day weekend!

Recent Math Homework

This was a tough week because I was sick and out of School on Monday and Tuesday. Once I was back students learned how to subtract integers and completed two assignments. One was Page 36 (1-15) and the other was Page 36 (16-32, 65-66). I apologize to the students who have not received their books yet and have given them time in class to copy down the HW questions. The new books should be distributed soon.

Dear Students and Parents:
¡Bienvenidos a la clase de Español! Welcome to Spanish class! We are excited to begin a new year and get to know all of you as we learn together.
This year I would like to order a scholastic foreign language magazine, for classroom use. The magazines are !Qué Tal! for the Spanish 1A and “Ahora” for the Spanish1B classes. The magazines are written in Spanish, and have exciting and interesting interactive student activities on every page and it includes free Internet activities in every issue (www.glasgowmagazines.com). Each issue comes with two audio CDs that allow students to listen to engaging radio shows, participate in audio games and contests and learn original songs to sing along with.
The cost per student is $9.00 please make your checks payable to Hardy Middle School. Your son/daughter will receive six issues this year. I am also asking parents to consider helping a student, who might be unable to pay. Any donations would be greatly appreciated (Remember every little bit helps). Please send your money or check as soon as possible.
Gracias

The 2009 National Book Festival

It's Time for the 2009 National Book Festival!

This year's National Book Festival will take place on the National Mall on September 26, 2009.  It will be held from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm between 7th and 14th Streets.  If you have been before, you know that it is not only place to buy some of the most up-to-date, contemporary books, but also a place to meet authors, old and new.

This year, I am so excited to see (and hear) Julia Alvarez, author of one of my favorite young adult books How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents.  Andddddddddddddd.....one of the most read young adult authors ever will be there - the prolific, Judy Blume!!!! Honestly, what girl hasn't read, Are You There God, It's Me Margaret? And the Superfudge series has helped many people survive elementary school and younger siblings.

But there are a host of other authors that will be there. And I will be there.  So if you go, know that you can get extra credit. Just take a couple of pictures (with you in it proving you went), and get some brochures from the event and bring that in on Monday, September 28th.  To get a full listing of the events and activities, and a map of the festival go to The National Book Festival Website.  See Ya There!

Math Homework and Project

This week students participated in the first DCBAS test and therefore did not have as much homework. There was one assignment on prime factorization called "Worksheet 4.1" Each student was also given their Advisory 1 project. The project is described below:

Building Success
1) Define "success" (do not use the dictionary definition)
2) What are six "building blocks" that will help you achieve success? These blocks should be qualities (adjectives) describing a person and not possessions. Focus on the type of person you want to be now and not what you have or what you want to accomplish in the future.
3) Design a poster (22" x 28") with your definition of success on top, your six building blocks of success in the middle, and your name on the bottom. Be creative and have fun!
The Posters are Due September 23rd

Okay, as I stated before, we will have weekly quizzes on the vocabulary words that are listed in the Vocabulary Workshop books you were issued.  There is a great website that allows you to test your knowledge of the vocabulary words in your vocabulary book and it is www.vocabtest.com
This website actually corresponds to the Vocabulary Workshop book and is divided into Units just like your book.  To utilize the site, visit the site, then look on the left hand side of the home page, find book LEVEL B, find the corresponding Unit you are studying, and click that.  You are then allowed to test your knowledge of the definitions, synonyms, pronunciation marks, antonyms. It evens gives you a score, a supposed "grade" if this was an actual test!  I suggest using this as a resource to assist you with learning your vocabulary words and aceing all your Vocabulary Quizzes.  Have fun, and continue your quest toward total vocabulary domination!!!  Peace Out...
